Our World Our Sea - Ghana

Our World Our Sea supports coastal communities to conserve marine turtles through community sensitization and actions at seas and along the 50Km western beach of Ghana bordering Cote d’Ivioire. For their continuous presence along the beaches through our clean up program, they have been able to rescue over 4,000 turtle eggs which are kept safely in hatcheries with a hatching rate of over 97%.

The project is committed to improving leaving conditions for at least five thousand locals from eight communities through improved sanitation, provision of additional livelihood forms, enhancing biodiversity capacity among others. Ten basic schools with over a thousand pupils are targeted to be trained in the creation of plastic murals with plastics from the cleanups. After the training, pupils will be stimulated to create their own murals which will enter a competition for which the best ten murals will be awarded with school bags, books, and pens. Interested adults will be trained to take up mural creation as an occupation to generate additional income, supporting their livelihoods. We will also target the use of gathered plastics materials to build one toilet facility for the Beyin community with high cases of cholera and encourage locals to use the facilities instead of defecating along the coast. The project in this situation will help improve coastal community health, minimizing the outbreak of sanitation-related diseases.
