Juara Turtle Project: Malaysia

The Juara Turtle Project is a community-based marine conservation NGO, located on Tioman island off the southeast coast of Malaysia. They work to deal with a wide range of marine conservation issues, that not only affect turtles, but the ocean ecosystem as a whole. One of these programs is their recycling initiative, set up to collect, process, and ship recyclables off the island and reduce the amount of waste actually processed by an already overburdened waste collection system on the island.

With our support, Juara will upgrade their machinery to enable additional onsite plastic waste recycling and improve the recycling center infrastructure to be able to keep up with the supply of plastic waste collected from Tioman island. The recycling center offers the community a way to avoid shipping waste off island or burning the waste on site. This saves the community money, avoids carbon emissions, and provides economic benefits for local residents while keeping beaches and waters cleaner.
