A selection of products and tools that will help you reduce your travel plastics.

At home we typically have many choices on where to shop, how to consume items without plastics, and how to dispose of items in an environmentally consciuos way. Of course, when we travel we are often in situations where we aren't fully aware of the facilities awaiting us, nor how well the area handles waste. In these situations a little preparation prior to a trip can have a massive impact on your sustainability.

On this page we offer a small selection of products that are available on the market today, to give you an idea of some options. If you would like to know more about the areas we cover then please fill out our pledge form and we will send you further information.

And if you have any other ideas on things travelers can carry with them then please do get in touch.

Water Purification Tools

Many people think it is a big deal to travel prepared to clean their own water. It is actually EASY.  There are so many different types of purification systems, that the only time consuming aspect of the whole process, is figuring out what system is right for you. Here are a small selection of what is available on the market today.

Remember, if you plan to purify your own water as you go, then test your purification system with your bottle to make sure they fit.

Steri-pen Water Purifier The SteriPEN is our top time-tested method for treating drinking water when traveling. Models like the SteriPEN Freedom are great for travelers because they are compact and can charge via a USB port. The wide mouth on the TAP Klean Kanteen is compatible with SteriPEN use; simply dip and stir until the light turns green. TAP is now an authorized dealer of Steripens and the profits from your purchase go back to the charitable work of the TAP Campaign and sustainable travel education.   Water purification tablets are an old standby that work well and are affordable. For about 8 bucks you get a bottle of 50 tablets, which you use two at a time to clean 1 liter of water. It does the job. The only drawback is you need to wait about 30 minutes for the tablets to dissolve, and the taste can be a bit bad which is why you should always get the little yellow bottle of neutralizing tablets as well. It is simply vitamin C but it removes any lingering taste.

Water filters and purifiers are another option, especially if you are spending time in the back-country pulling water from streams and lakes. Both filters and purifiers remove protozoa and bacteria from water, but only purifiers also remove viruses. We’ve used the First Need Water Purifier for many years and find it to be easy to use and effective.

Reusable Shopping Bags

cotton drawstring 900x900
There are many types of pretty, lightweight, compactible shopping bags you can tuck in your purse or pack. These come in handy when you are off on a day of site seeing and find that perfect souvenir you just can’t say no to, but can reply “no thanks” to the bag. Many countries and cities are moving to ban bags, so travel prepared.

Reusable cutlery or chopsticks

There are several compact well-designed cutlery sets to go. It’s a great idea if you plan on eating street food so you can say “no thanks” to the plastic forks and spoons they offer you. These also come in handy if you find yourself at a hotel whose breakfast buffet has only plastic cutlery. A great alternative is to carry a set of chopsticks.

Smoking with less plastic

Belive it or not, the most commonly found garbage in the ocean is the filters from cigarettes. These are made from plastic fibers and do not degrade. Consider traveling with a small tin made specifically for this purpose, which you can put your butts in and dispose of properly once back at your hotel.

Mascotte Organic filters 555x555 Another alternative, especially if you roll your own cigarettes, is to use organic filters, even at home. These can be pretty hard to come across in many countries so it's worth taking some with you.
