Water purification tablets are an old standby that work well and are affordable. For about 8 bucks you get a bottle of 50 tablets, which you use two at a time to clean 1 liter of water. It does the job. The only drawback is you need to wait about 30 minutes for the tablets to dissolve, and the taste can be a bit bad which is why you should always get the little yellow bottle of neutralizing tablets as well. It is simply vitamin C but it removes any lingering taste.
Water filters and purifiers are another option, especially if you are spending time in the backcountry and pulling water from streams and lakes. Both filters and purifiers remove protozoa and bacteria from water, but only purifiers also remove viruses. REI has several different filter and purifier options (http://www.rei.com/category/4500030), and you can speak with well-informed staff at their stores to assess your specific needs. We’ve used the First Need Water Purifier for many years and find it to be easy to use and effective.
